M. Gorky Monument

In 1932, in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the social and literary work of A.M Gorky, the park assumed the name of this great proletarian writer.

Alexei Maximovich came to the park three times, in 1929, 1931 and 1934. During one of the writer’s visits, Betty Nikolaevna Glan, the park’s first director, presented her idol with a grand bouquet of rare flowers. As it turned out, Gorky actually adored fragrant plants.

The first monument to Maxim Gorky was erected in the park not far from Landyshevaya alley, soon after the writer’s death, in 1939. It didn’t survive to the present. The new monument to the young M. Gorky was erected near the park’s Lenin Square in 1974.The sculptor was N.B. Nikogosian and the architect was R.I. Simmerdzhiev.
